Subject and object pronouns : Definition and Examples

Today we are going to learn about subject and object pronouns. Pronouns are used instead of nouns. Which can be used as the subject and object of the sentence.These nouns are the main pillars of the sentence. Two types of pronouns are :

  • Subject
  • Object

Subject pronouns

The pronoun that sits as a subject in a sentence is called subjective pronoun. For example – I, We, he etc.

The english subject pronouns are – I, You, He, She, It, We, They.

1: We use these pronouns when they sit as the subject of the verb

  • I love my family.
  • We play cricket.
  • She is a housewife.
  • You have been eaten the chocolate.
  • It was hot.
  • They are going to university.

2. Other examples:

Numan travelled with his girlfriend.

In this sentence, Numan is performing the action, which means that Numan is the subject. If you want to use a pronoun instead of the subject of this sentence, choose the correct pronoun for this sentence.

He will be a perfect subject in this sentence. The Sentence are –

He traveled with his girlfriend.”

Object pronouns

In English we use object pronouns.It is used as a pronoun at the end of a sentence. They are – Me, You, Him, Her,It, Us, Them. For example –

Numan travelled with his girlfriend.

The object of this sentence is her girlfriend. To replace her girlfriend with a pronoun. If you want to use a pronoun instead of the object of this sentence, choose the correct pronoun for this sentence. Her will be a perfect object in this sentence.

“Numan travelled with her.”

Other examples:

1: We use them for the object of a verb

  1. Numan knows me.
  2. Numan killed you.
  3. The cat licked him.
  4. Numan hugged her.
  5. The teacher dropped it.
  6. The teacher love us.
  7. She helped them.

2: We use them after a preposition

  1. He is known to me.
  2. Can the father come with you?
  3. Look at her.
  4. The banana is for him.
  5. He is looking forward to it.
  6. Keep up with us!
  7. He works for them.

3: We use them after “be”

  1. Who’s there? It’s me!
  2. It’s you.
  3. It was him! etc.

4: We use them with short answers.

  1. Who ate the Ice-cream? Ans: Me!
  2. Who’s there? Ans: Him!

With short answer, we can also use a subject pronoun + a verb. For examples :

  1. Who’s there? Ans: I am!
  2. Who ate the Ice-cream? Ans: He did!
  3. I’m tired. Ans: I am too.

5: We can use them after as and than for comparisn.

  1. He is tall as me.
  2. She is taller than her.

We can again use the subject pronoun + a verb in the same situation.

  1. He is taller than I am.
  2. She is taller than he is.

6: We can use them after ‘but’ and ‘except’.

  1. Everybody went school early but me.
  2. Everybody went home early except him.

In addition to these, subject and object pronouns are used in many other places.
