Interesting Fact about the Letter S

Are you curious about the origins of the letter “s”? The origins of this letter can be traced back to ancient Egyptian sword hieroglyphs. The “s” was frequently used by the ancient Egyptians. They used to have nine separate symbols for different variants of the “s” or “sh” sound! Fortunately, when the Phoenicians developed the modern alphabet from which our alphabet is born, they eliminated most of those drawings and sounds, leaving only one version of the letter “s.”

More changes were made by the ancient Greeks and Romans, with more to follow. Even the letter “s” in the English alphabet made a transition. In the 17th century, a letter that appeared like a lowercase “f” actually indicated the “s” sound. After many twists and turns, the 19th letter of the English alphabet was finally chosen, and now it is a super letter.

Speak Out With S

Despite its complicated origins, the letter “s” always sounds the same – like “ess.”

  • When making the “s” sound, your vocal cords should be relaxed.
  • To form the “s” sound correctly, position your tongue behind your lower gums, curving up.
  • When you make the “s” sound, your tongue should touch the side of your teeth, and you should feel the air pass over your tongue.

The letter “s” can be challenging for some people with speech impediments. Some people pronounce things without the “s,” while others pronounce it like a “th,” and still others over pronounce the “s” and speak with a lisp.
