A common noun is a noun that does not specify any person, object or animal of the same kind, but all of them.
For example: Student, Book, Dog, Flower, Father, Mother, Children etc.
It basically refers to specific general names of persons, objects, places, things, etc. It acts as the opposite of Proper Noun
Examples:
- Asif is a student . (Student refers to all students. Does not specify any specific student)
- Dogs can be very cute. (Dog means all national dogs. It can be of any breed or type or colour. It can be any dog of any country.)
